About us
In 1995 His Eminence Archbishop Dmitri officially proclaimed St Alexis a mission station. Fr Michael Meredith, a retired priest, conducted services every Sunday morning and Vespers one Saturday evening each month. A Sunday School program and adult Bible class were started.
In 1996 Fr Michael was assigned full time priest in Titusville. St. Alexis Mission moved to a larger location when we outgrew the storefront. In 1997, we again relocated to St Stephens Catholic Church in Bunnell. A dedicated group of Orthodox Christians continue to work toward making services available to area Orthodox and to bring others to the Orthodox faith.
In 2000 a young priest, Fr. Svyatoslav Vasilyev, began assisting at St. Alexis. Fr. Slava, as he was called, drove from St. Stephen’s OCA parish in Longwood (serving the greater Orlando area) and was to be assigned as the Priest-in-Charge of the Mission. Tragically, on March 23, 2001, while driving from Orlando to Bunnell to serve the Presanctified Liturgy during Great and Holy Lent, Fr. Slava was killed in an automobile accident. (May his memory be eternal!) The shock of this loss set the Mission back significantly as we then had to rely on retired priests, some of whom had to drive great distances, which limited the service schedule. One of the most noted retired priests to serve St. Alexis was Archpriest Nicholas Molodyko-Harris.
For nearly 11 years, Archpriest Nicholas Molodyko-Harris (retired from the Diocese of Alaska) served as spiritual father to St. Alexis parishioners. Joined by his wife, Matushka Anastasia, they faithfully traveled from their home in Merritt Island to serve St. Alexis each week. Matushka Anastasia served as choir director.
When health issues prevented the Harrises from traveling every week to St. Alexis, the mission was lovingly served for 5 years by Archpriest Phillip Drennan (retired Antiochian priest) and his wife Khouria Diane, from January of 2016 until May of 2021.
In June 2021, Archpriest David C. Rucker began serving at St. Alexis, after many years of often being a substitute priest when needed. He was assigned as Priest-in-Charge on June 13, 2022. Fr. David was ordained in 2002 by Archbishop DMITRI (Royster), of blessed memory, and had founded St. Athanasius Orthodox Church in Nicholasville, Kentucky before moving to St. Augustine, Florida to serve as Associate Director of the Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC). Fr. David and Matushka Rozanne had recently finished 13 years of ministry with OCMC, which included Fr David’s tenure as Associate Director as well as time as Mission Specialists in Guatemala and teaching at St. Herman Theological Seminary in Kodiak, Alaska. Matushka Rozanne serves as Choir Director and is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.
The St. Alexis Mission community is committed to growing into full Church status, including owning our own building and property, as part of the greater vision of becoming disciples of Jesus Christ as we participate in making disciples. While currently meeting at St. Stephen Catholic Chapel, St. Alexis Mission is actively looking for property/buildings in Flagler County that we might call our own.
We gladly welcome all guests. Come pray with us!
